FENDI
Cruise/Resort 2013

LIVELY LADY

New York: Karl Lagerfeld presented one his most playful Fendi collections to date for resort. The typically prim and proper Fendi woman broke out of her shell this season, with sexy thigh slits, eye-catching prints and kooky/fabulous fur coats. The prints were inspired by Vienna Secessionist artist Leopold Stolba. The loopy floral borrowed from his work was used for dresses and tops and was even dyed into a fur coat. Lagerfeld also included a more businesslike graph paper motif and Lego-inspired geometrics. Subtle seventies references could be felt in the embellished silk tops, high-waisted shorts and midi lengths. A hot pink shaggy fur was the perfect embodiment of the new liveliness exhibited this season. One could imagine Anna Dello Russo driving the bloggers wild in it. –Joanna Manganaro

Jean Paul Gaultier

Couture F/W 2012

FROM PARIS, WITH LOVE

Paris: Jean Paul Gaultier’s couture collection for fall had a slew of interrelated references, with Paris as thread that connected them all. First there was George Sand, the cross-dressing, public-smoking female French novelist. Erin O’Conner, playing Sand in tux and tails, was the dramatic opening of the collection. Gaultier went on to trot out several versions of the tuxedo and added tails to dresses and jackets throughout the collection. Sand’s gender bending may have inspired Gaultier to use the trans-gender model Andrej Pejic for women’s dresses, rather than the handful of men’s looks that were included in the show. Sand was the lover of Alfred de Musset, whose book Confession of a Child of the Century was made into a recent film starring Pete Doherty. Doherty’s music was the soundtrack for the show. Jumping ahead a few decades, Art Deco designs were pieced onto dresses and jackets, and glamorous flapper looks were inserted here and there. The influential 1927 film Metropolis even seemed to have been an influence, as gold metal cage pieces appeared. Though the more flamboyant pieces captured Gaultier’s showman’s nature, some of the best were the quieter looks. A boxy dress made from camel-colored wool was understated and chic, a perfect counterbalance to all the glitz and glamour. –Joanna Manganaro

Lie Sang Bong

Lie Sang Bong often looks to traditional craft techniques for inspiration, twisting them into modern pieces with a dash of humor. This season he interpreted stones from classic Korean architecture as embroidery and circular stitched dresses, playing with transparency and patent leather shine. Soft, organic lines blended disparate materials, while laser cutting and a dark palette created an aggressive mood. Although tall stiletto boots and bib harnesses added a fetish element, the designer had plenty of fun with mottled fur skirts and sheer dresses strewn with a confetti of padded pebbles.
